Manage Scientific Journal rankings

The import of Scientific Journal Rankings into ACADEM make it possible to assess and highlight the quality of publications by the institution’s faculty members.

The RimaOne team regularly collects updated rankings published by various organizations (CNRS, VHB, HCERES, ABCD, etc.). These data are formatted in Excel files, which can be downloaded from your Redmine space > Documents > Ranking.

Organizations whose rankings are provided by RimaOne
  • ABDC
  • ABS
  • CNRS
  • EJL

Adding and Editing Rankings

Importing a New Ranking into ACADEM

1/ From the menu Data > Import > Data: under the Group label, select Importation, then under the Task label, select Import Journals Ranking.

2/ Click the blue Upload button to upload the Excel file saved on your computer containing the latest ranking to be imported.

  • If the “Add missing publication supports” checkbox is selected: when the system cannot find a match between the title of a media (or its ISSN) and those already recorded in ACADEM, the new version of the ranking will be uploaded, and any missing supports will automatically be created and linked to the new version of the ranking with the specified value.
  • If this checkbox is not selected: the new version of the ranking will only be linked to supports that already exist in the database.

3/ Click the Execute button to import the ranking.

4/ The result of the import is sent to the inbox. Once the import is complete, the new ranking is displayed under the menu Data > Journal > Rankings.

ℹ️ The first import launched with the checkbox “Add missing publication supports” selected may take a little time, as the system will need to create all the missing supports.
In this case, wait to receive confirmation of this first import in your inbox before launching a second ranking import with the “Add missing publication supports” checkbox selected. If both imports are performed simultaneously, duplicate journals may be created.

Required data in the imported file

The file name does not matter, but we recommend you to use the name of the organization publishing the ranking along with the ranking year to make tracking easier over time.

If the file contains multiple tabs, only the first tab will be imported into ACADEM.

The column order can be changed, but not their headers.

The following columns are mandatory:

  • Classement (Ranking): Name of the ranking.
⚠️ If updating an existing ranking in ACADEM: use the exact same name as the existing one to avoid creating a new ranking.
  • Année (Year): Version of the ranking. This does not necessarily have to be a year; free text is allowed.
  • Date Publication: The publication date of the ranking. The ranking will be considered active from this date in ACADEM.
  • Revue (Journal): Name of the scientific journal.
  • ISSN/ISSN2: Identification codes (ISSN and e-ISSN) of the scientific journal.
  • Catégorie (Category): Ranking value of the journal.
  • TypeSupport: Type of contribution medium. This field is linked to the reference table TYPECTRSUPPORT in ACADEM.

ℹ️You can import your own ranking in ACADEM, if its contains the required data.

Updating Rankings

When a ranking has already been imported into ACADEM, it can be updated by importing a new version.

The import is done in the same place as for the first version:

  1. From the menu Data > Import > Data > Group: Importation, and Task: Import Journals Ranking
  2. Click the Upload button to download the Excel file with the new version of the ranking.
  3. Click the Execute button to import the ranking.
  4. The import result will be sent to your inbox. Once the import is complete, the new ranking will appear under Data > Journal > Rankings.

The new version of the ranking will take effect based on its publication date.

ℹ️Scientific Journal’s names can vary a little between different rankings or in the ACADEM database (e.g., “Journal of Accounting and Management” vs “Journal of Accounting & Management”).
To avoid creating duplicate support entries in the database, it is recommended to perform a first import without checking the “Add missing publication supports” option.
Once the import is complete, open the logs sent to your inbox to check if any support from the ranking were not recognized in the database.

  • If yes: Check whether the journal already exists in the database but with a slightly different name or an incorrect ISSN code. In this case, you’ll need to correct either the journal entry in the database or its representation in the import file to properly match the data.
  • If no: Re-run the import, this time checking the “Add missing supports” option.

If duplicates are found, supports can be merged in the ACADEM database. See this article to learn ➡️ how to merge duplicate media

Edit/Delete an Imported Ranking

Rankings can be created, edited, or deleted from the menu: Data > Journal > Rankings

Several data can be modified from this feature, regarding data already imported :

  • Name of the ranking
  • Type of support
  • Version’s name and label
  • Publication’s date
  • Ranking values (A, A*, B, C for example)

Add (+) and delete (×) buttons are also available on this page for precise, manual management of specific rankings.
If new ranking values are created on this page, they must be manually linked to the relevant publication supports.
To do this, go to the menu Data > Journal > Journal & Other Media, select the publication support, then use the Classifications tab in the support’s edit window.
(See next section: Add a ranking value to a Contribution support)

This screen is useful for reviewing the dates of each imported ranking version and updating them if needed.
To go faster, we recommend you to use imports to add or update rankings.

Using Rankings

Add a Ranking Value to a Contribution Support

From the menu, go to Data > Journal > Journals & Other Media

To add a ranking to an existing support, search for the support name in the list, then click the yellow button at the bottom of the screen to edit the support’s record.

Select the Classifications tab in the edit window > search for the ranking to link the support with > then select the ranking value from the dropdown list.

The rankings imported into ACADEM are used to assess the quality of Intellectual Contributions published by the institution’s faculty members.

Track Rankings on the Dashboard

By adding the Global Ranking widget to the dashboard, you can have a quick view of the institution’s ranked publications.
From the Dashboard menu, right-click anywhere on the page to access the list of available widgets.

Once the widget is displayed on the Dashboard: click the gear icon in the top right to select a ranking and its version to display.

The widget provides a quick overview of:

  • The different rankings available in the ACADEM database
  • The ranked publication supports and the number of recorded publications for each

Analyze Ranked Contributions

From the menu Multi-Dimensional Analysis > Intellectual Contributions > use the Filters: Media tab > Support Qualification
Faculty contributions can be filtered based on the ranking of the journals in which they were published.

It is then possible to view or export the list of Intellectual Contributions associated with a specific ranking and/or ranking value, allowing you to assess the value of the institution’s research output.

For example, you can view all publications rated A and A* according to the 2019 ABDC ranking.
